January 22, 2009: Mishkon & IHB Help Kids Remember MLK and Share the Inauguration.

On January 20th, Mishkon hosted an event that most of us will remember for a lifetime. Thanks to the Brooklyn Continuum of Care, a project was initiated between IHB Day Treatment Center and Mishkon. We titled the day: Past, Present and Future; the past being Dr. King, the present being our new president, and the future being the children of IHB. Thanks to the hard work of our hostess, Odell Ellegor, her committee and Darlene Foulke this day was a resounding success.

We give special thanks to Jonathan Mclean, our guest speaker from Southern Brooklyn, whose presentation was the culmination of a fabulous day.

For those who missed it we had a DJ, a guest appearance by Barak Obama and his secret service agents (Shhhh, don't tell the kids, but we couldn't get Barak—he was busy in Washington that day—so we made do with "doubles"), delicious food, a large screen TV to watch the inauguration (thanks to Lynn Kroll), a speech by one of the students from IHB, Jonathan’s speech and speeches by the Mishkon staff. Our cake had our theme with pictures of Dr. King and President Obama; we had posters, balloons, booklets of articles written by our staff and buttons to memorialize the day.

Everyone felt invigorated and elevated to have shared the experience together!

January 21, 2009: Online interview with Paul Levine and Alice Wheatley-Street

The online radio show On-the-Line with Child Welfare League of America features a 30-minute interview with JBFCS CEO Paul Levine and Alice Wheatley-Street titled “A Promising Pilot Program: Agency-Based Mental Health Services for Children In Foster Care.”

Experts estimate that 42 to 60 percent of the children in foster care have emotional and behavioral problems due to the traumatic circumstances that led to their placement in care. Yet, many of the children and youth in foster care are not receiving the mental health services they need to strengthen their emotional well-being, reduce the risk of frequent placements and ultimately achieve better outcomes in life. This edition of “On-the-Line” with CWLA features a discussion about a promising new model of agency-based mental health services that are designed to significantly improve the access to mental health services for children in foster care. January 15, 2009: JBFCS Staff Contribute to New Social Work Publication

The new book Encyclopedia of Social Work with Groups, edited by Gitterman and Salmon, includes an article authored by Mary Pender Greene, with contributions from April Harvin, Ellen Blaufox, and Julie Sullivan-Redmond. The chapter by our JBFCS staffers focuses on family and children's services, and provides an excellent overview of the services offered from an agency such as ours and how we utilize groups in treatment.
